As more businesses have started leveraging the internet to market their products and services, search engine optimization has enabled them to successfully penetrate their targeted audience by generating immense visibility and by driving a surge of traffic to their business website. However, it is important to know that there are two types of SEO – one in known as Black Hat and one is White Hat. While White Hat SEO uses legitimate ways of generating page rankings, Black Hat SEO uses a host of illicit techniques that are banned by prominent search engines such as Google.
Black Hat SEO Techniques :
- Meta description – Manipulation of the meta descriptions is a very commonly practiced SEO technique. Instead of describing the content of the page in 2 or 3 sentences, Black Hat marketers fill their meta descriptions with a bunch of sentences and phrases that are not relevant to the site in order to gain high page rankings on search engines.
- Hidden content – This is one of the most notorious techniques used by Black Hat Marketers. Using this technique Black Hatters hide additional content that is not displayed on the page by stuffing it into the various html codes on the page. Although the hidden content cannot be viewed, it does impact the position of Black Hat websites that are vying for high page rankings.
- Keyword stuffing – Since SEO and page rankings rely largely on keywords, Black Hat marketers often stuff some of the highest trending and highly searched keywords randomly in the content of their websites. This technique is called keyword stuffing and is banned by Google.
White Hat SEO Techniques
- Good quality content – Compared to Black Hat , White Hat SEO employs the use of good quality content in order to gain traffic and visibility on search engines. This technique consists of regularly uploading fresh, good quality content to a website.
- Effective keyword use – In White Hat SEO only the most relevant keywords are used in the content of a website. The keywords should not exceed 2 % of the total content per page.
- Generating backlinks – White Hat SEO is famous for its ability to generate quality backlinks from high quality sites across the internet. Organic backlinks are much appreciated by search engines and can be used to bolster the pager rankings of a site.
Before selecting your SEO provider, ensure that they do not use Black Hat techniques as this could get your site banned. Although White Hat would take much longer to generate results, it is most definitely a more effective, reliable and safer technique in the long run.
