Best “Smart” Devices to Come out of CES 2012

The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) has long been a place for companies to show off their latest and greatest cell phones. The following phones top the lists of many CES 2012 cell phone reviews.

1. Nokia Lumia 900

The biggest splash of the show was made by Nokia and its Lumia 900. This beauty runs Windows Phone 7.5, captures 720p video from its 8 megapixel camera on its back and, unlike its predecessor the Lumia 800, also includes a 1 mega pixel forward facing camera for video chatting. The Lumia 900 only sports a single core processor, but it is a speedy one at 1.4Ghz. Access to AT&T’s 4G LTE network rounds it out with fast web and video loading. Its slick skyblue design (also available in black) is similar to the Lumia 800 and makes it a stylish choice. The biggest question mark with this phone is the platform itself: will the Windows Phone OS ever take a sizable portion of the market share from its competitors? Unconfirmed rumors have this phone debuting in March, but Nokia has only officially announced that it will come out “in the coming months.”

2. Sony Xperia S:

The most innovative phone has to be the Sony Xperia S, which is paired with what must be the world’s first “smart watch.” The Xperia S, along with other select Sony Android phonesSony Xperia S, can connect to the aptly named Sony SmartWatch, which has a small 1.3 inch touchscreen display and can handle phone calls, texts, music, acting as a remote for the Xperia S’s 12.1 megapixel 1080p back facing camera, and running specifically designed apps. As for the phone itself, its most striking design feature is an illuminated strip below the screen which, besides looking stylish, provides easier access to buttons in the dark. The Xperia S sports a 1.3 megapixel 720p front facing camera to go along with the aforementioned back camera for completely HD video chatting. This 1.5Ghz dual core powered phone and the corresponding watch will be available sometime in the first quarter of this year.

3. Samsung Galaxy Note:

The Samsung Galaxy Note was the winner for the videophiles out there. Its massive 5.3 inch HD screen certainly impresses, more than aptly displaying video, graphics and web Samsung Galaxy Notebrowsing. Partially to counteract any problems with typing on a phone of this size, the Note comes packaged with a pen for memos, drawings, games, and even text input thanks to handwriting recognition software. Additionally, the Note brings new “gesture based” commands, such as swiping to take a screen shot or placing your palm on the screen to pause music. It remains to be seen if consumers will be excited about these features, but the beautiful screen, 1.4 Ghz dual core processors and the AT&T 4G LTE network it is connected to assure this phone is a winner. The Galaxy Note is slated for release early this year.

With no iOS phone debuting to speak of, CES 2012 was a time for the new Android 4.0 and Windows Phone 7.5 phones to shine in this and many other cell phone reviews.
