Speed Up Your Windows PC Start Up | Make Your Windows Startup Faster

Does your PC  takes a long time to start and load? Yes.  Without any doubt this is the 2nd most popular problem or question  faced by  windows users.  But this happens when your computer gets a bit older and loaded with many programs .  So how should you speed up your windows PC?  Their are various premium and free  softwares which promises to boost your windows speed. But in this article I have described the Best ways to Speed up your Windows PC for Free . Yup free without any premium softwares. Just with few tweaks and untold tips.

1. Speed Up Windows Start-Up

  • Go to  Start>>Run
  • Type MSconfig . Press Enter  or Select  OK.
  • System Configuration Utility window will be opened.
  • In that click on Startup.
  • You will see various Apps with selected checked box.
  • So you have to uncheck  the box of the Apps which you don’t use often.
  • As in below image you can see I have unchecked the programs which I don’t want to load on startup.
  • This will speed up your start up.

2. Stop Extra Services

  • Open the Services tab beside startup .
  • Check “Hide All Microsoft Services” option given below.
  • This option will hide all important services from Microsoft an will only display Third-Party Services.
  • Uncheck the services which you don’t want load on startup.
  • This will stop all stop the services to load on startup boosting your PC’s speed.

3. Increase Paging File

  • Right click on My Computer.
  • Select Properties and then Advanced.
  • Click on Settings Of Performance section as shown in image.

  • Another window with Performance Option will pop-up.
  • Click on Advanced tab>>Again you will see 3 options.
  • In that click on Change button as shown in the image.

  • Increase the paging file for C drive by 15-20% than default not more than that.

4. Stop Indexing Service

Indexing Service consumes excessive amount of memory which slows down your PC.  So if you don’t use the XP search feature often, stop the indexing service to speed up your windows.  To stop indexing service :

  • Open My Compute>>Right click on C: Drive.
  • Uncheck the option of Allowing indexing service to index this disk for faster file searching.
  • Resulting your windows to speed up.

5. Make sure your XP is in DMA Mode (Direct Memory Access)

By default XP use DMA on most ATA or ATAPI devices. Still it may switch to PIO mode which slows down your PC. The common reason behind this is virus. So make sure your XP is running on DMA. To check :

  • Right click on My Computer>>Properties>>Hardware.
  • Click on Device Manager>>Double click on IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers.
  • Double click on Primary IDE Channel>>Advanced Setting.
  • Check that your Transfer Mode is DMA.
  • If not change it DMA if available.

6. Speed Up Folder Browsing

While browsing files in my computer windows conventionally  looks for printer and network files. This slows down your PC. To Speed Up Folder Browsing :

  • Open My Computer>>Click on Tools>>Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Uncheck the option : Automatically search for network folders and printer.
  • Click Apply.

7. Load Your Menus Faster

  • Open Run>>Type Regedit>>Click OK.
  • Double Click  HKEY_CURRENT_USER>>Double Click Control Panel>>Single Click On Desktop.
  • Double Click MenuShowDelay>>Change Value Data to 100.

8. Clear Your Temp Files

  • Click Start>>Select Run.
  • Type  %Temp%.
  • Clear all the Temp files.

9. Use Disk Clean Up

This tool helps you clean up all the unnecessary files and free up space . Disk Clean UP tool  speeds up your windows performance . To use Disk Clean Up Tool :

  • Open My Computer>>Right Click on C Drive :
  • Select Properties>>General>>Click On Disk Clean UP button
  • It will start Calculating how space it will be able to free.
  • Check the boxes of files which you want clear.
  • It will Clean Up all the unnecessary files from your PC.

10. Defragment Your Files

For using the Defragment Utility you need to have at least 15% of free space on the drive.

  • My Computer>>Right Click on C Drive : >>Select Properties
  • Select the Tools tab>>Click On Defragment Now
